New York City police intervened to prevent a mob in Harlem from attacking Shaquan Cummings, a 30-year-old man accused of a violent attack on an 11-year-old girl. The incident occurred Friday afternoon on the 116th Street 6 subway platform, where Cummings is alleged to have slashed the girl in the head and ear as she stood next to her mother. Prior to this assault, Cummings reportedly punched a 43-year-old woman nearby.
The young victim, feeling a sharp pain, turned to find Cummings fleeing with a box cutter. Despite her mother's attempts to stop him, including flagging down a subway conductor, Cummings escaped. The attack left the girl severely traumatized, now afraid to venture outside, and requiring surgery to repair the wounds, which included multiple stitches and staples.
The incident led to an outpour of public outrage. A mob formed, seeking to confront Cummings, who was quickly apprehended by the police just a block away from where he initially fled. In a dramatic scene captured on video and shared on social media, police shielded Cummings from the angry crowd, some of whom attempted to strike him.
This attack is one of several violent offenses attributed to Cummings, who has a lengthy criminal history including over 20 prior arrests. His recent activities have reignited concerns over public safety and the effectiveness of the city's measures to manage repeat offenders.
Cummings was charged with two counts of assault and acting in a manner injurious to a child. The NYPD has since recovered the weapon involved, a box cutter, from the uptown train tracks. The community and the victim's family now await justice, hoping for a safer environment where such violent acts are a rarity rather than a recurring nightmare.
